The Memoria & GreenAcres Transcendence Garden is a show garden at the 2023 RHS Chelsea Flower Show and was designed by McWilliam Studio. My client, engineer Dave Rayment, was responsible for the elegant cantilevered pavilion which is the centrepiece for the garden. Created to be minimalist and pure, with a skylight which opens a view to the sky and cloudscape above, drawing the eye upwards and delivering a dynamic light pattern and contrast between light and shadow to the garden below.
The garden aims to deliver an uplifting, spiritual and inspiring space, reflecting the emotional and cultural shared experience at the end of life. A reflective and inspiring space that promotes discussions about the end of life and grieving.
The best way to make a Chelsea garden more sustainable is to re-purpose it when the show ends and ensure that it has a life afterwards. Extending the life-span of the garden for many years will significantly reduce the impact of the embodied carbon in elements such as the concrete pavilion whilst also ensuring that none of the materials end up in landfill. The plan is to relocate the Memoria & GreenAcres Transcendence to the grounds of the Memoria North Oxfordshire Memorial Park and Crematorium.
